Descripción BioAlb is an Albanian initiative to promote our natural wild-growing plants and collection of aromatic and medicinal herbs. Albania’s natural treasures, wild plants and medicinal herbs found in huge quantities in fields and mountains, which create employment opportunities for approximately 100,000 Albanian rural dwellers. Gifted with approximately 500.000 ha surface area of wild Aromatic Plants and Medicinal Herbs, Albania is a leader in the production and export of these natural goodies.
Nature has given Albania a huge variety of wild medicinal plants, while their cultivation started 4 years ago. The subsector of medicinal and aromatic plants generates approximately Euro 18 million from export sales, being listed as the second largest export sector in agriculture. During 2013, Albania exported approximately 11,221 tons of medicinal herbs and plants worth Euro 23,761,115.
Traditionally Albania exports unprocessed dried herbs in bulk, which are usually treated and re-packaged abroad. These processed wild plants are then used in the food industry for herbal teas, as additives in food preparations, sold in markets in form of edible spices, extracted for essential oils or used in beverage industry, healthcare, cosmetics and perfumes.
Albania’s main prides are sage, Juniper, oregano, thyme and savory, which are exported in huge quantities abroad. Sage is the queen of all medicinal herbs. Albania is one of the largest international suppliers of Sage to the USA.
